Newer Sub-Zero units display a three-part code — something like 90-5-38 — where the leading number identifies the fault category, and the two numbers after it point to the specific component and detail. Older units instead show a simpler two-digit code preceded by "EC" (for example, EC24 or EC40), usually reached by holding down a button combination on the control panel. Either way, the code alone tells you the category of problem; matching it to a family below gets you the likely cause and whether it's something you can check yourself before calling for service.
